A Brief History
Uttara started in 1966 as a project by the Dhaka Improvement Trust (DIT) called the North Satellite Town project. Later, in 1980, it got a new name: the Uttara Residential Model Town Project. This name shows how it combines modern and traditional ideas.
The development of Uttara happened in three parts, each carefully planned by RAJUK. The first part finished in 1992, creating 6,000 residential plots in Sectors 1 through 10. The second part, from 1988 to 1994, added Sectors 11 through 14. The third part, which aimed to be done by June 2022, planned to add more land, about 2,150 acres, for 10,000 residential plots and over 225,000 apartments, plus things like parks and schools.
