Exploring Ramna Park: Lungs Of Dhaka

Ramna Park

Located in the heart of Dhaka, Ramna Park is affectionately known as the “lungs of the city.” It serves as a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of urban life, offering a refreshing escape amidst Dhaka’s vibrant streets. Managed by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Ramna Park holds special significance as both a cultural icon and a historical landmark of Bangladesh.

A Glimpse into History

Ramna Park is one of the oldest parks in Bangladesh, with its roots tracing back to the Mughal era when Dhaka was the capital of Bengal. It is believed that in 1610, under the rule of Subedar Islam Khan and Emperor Jahangir, the park was established and named “Bagh-e-Badshahi.” Until 1824, it was known by this name, encompassing a vast area that included what is now Suhrawardy Udyan.

Over time, particularly after the partition of Bengal in 1905, the park was divided, leading to the separation of Ramna Udyan and the Racecourse Maidan. The Racecourse Maidan, now known as Suhrawardy Udyan, remained a significant landmark until Bangladesh’s independence.

During the British era, the park fell into neglect until it was revived by the British collector Dowes and further developed by Dhaka’s Nawabs between 1908 and 1928. A royal garden named “Shahbag” and a zoo, which was later moved to Mirpur, were part of these developments. The park was officially opened in 1949, originally covering 88.5 acres with 71 species of trees. Due to space constraints, it has since been reduced to 68.5 acres.

The park also bears a tragic history. On March 25, 1971, Pakistani forces destroyed the Ramna Kali Temple and the adjacent Maa Anand Ashram, killing about 200 Hindus who had taken refuge there.

What to See in Ramna Park

Ramna Park boasts 192 species of plants, including 71 species of shrubs and perennials, 36 species of fruit trees, 33 species of herbs, 41 species of timber trees, and 11 other plant species. This rich diversity makes it an excellent spot for parents to introduce their children to native plant species.

One of the park’s main attractions is the serene lake covering 8.76 acres. The park also features modern rest areas, beautiful walkways, and charming garden lamps, enhancing its beauty.

Seasonal flowers bloom throughout the year, with crimson Krishnachura in spring, lush Keya in the rainy season, and delicate autumn blooms adding to the park’s charm. Unique trees like rain trees, mahogany, rare mahua, and padauk trees thrive here. The famous banyan tree on the southwest side of the park is the site for the annual Bengali New Year celebration, drawing thousands of visitors.
